What is the title of a childrens’s book anout an apple theft?

I can barely remember this book. I think the story was a man puts an green apple in the window sill to let it ripen. Someone steals it and carries it around eventually returning it after some adventures. By the time he returns it, the apple is red and ripe. Does anyone remember this book?
