How to set up a mac computer network for an arts department at an elementary school?

Posted by dodatki | Posted in Computer Networking | Posted on 15-03-2010

I would like to set up a computer lab of 8-10 mac computers that will serve approximately 180 students. Each student will maintain (with help, obviously) a portfolio of work done in art and music class. Therefore, I would like each student to have her own login ID and folder. Since the files will be audio and pictures, storage needs are high.

I will administer the network. I have mac experience, but I am not a sysadmin by any means. I can learn quickly and I am tech savvy, but I hold no illusions of becoming a Unix guru during this school year. The school will be able to get support for installation but I will need to run the thing myself.

Any ideas for hardware/software configurations are welcome. The workstations will likely be mac minis, other than that budget is not a huge issue.

How do you choose what to EXACTLY share in Mac OS X Windows Sharing Feature?

Posted by dodatki | Posted in Computer Networking | Posted on 03-01-2010

OK so I have been playing with Mac OS X and Windows Vista Ultimate, specifically their file sharing features. After going online and researching, I figured it out. (Just Google search it if your interested.) Now the “problem”, although some might not find it as such, is that with BOTH Mac and Windows, when I sharing, SHARED EVERYTHING! All the Music, Pictures, Desktop Items, etc, in both Mac and Windows, were shared! I just want to share specific files not everything now! I want some privacy… Well after playing with Windows Vista, I found out what was the problem. By default, I am guessing, the USERS Folder is shared, which makes everything shared. So I made the USERS Folder ‘unsharable’ and then chose specifically what folders I wanted to share through the Right-Click Properties option. WOO HOO ONE DOWN. Now with Mac OS X, I can’t figure out how to stop making everything shareable and choose specifically what folder to share. Help anyone! A STEP BY STEP would be nice. :-)

Why does my mac computer at work keep getting bumped off the network?

Posted by dodatki | Posted in Computer Networking | Posted on 21-12-2009

Shannon F asked:

I have a mac at work and I’m constantly getting bumped off their server with the message “Your password has expired. Contact your system administrator for more information”. Then IT has to reset my password so I can log in again.

This message isn’t for my computer password, just for my network password. This happens multiple times a day and is getting very frustrating. Any ideas??
