How much does it cost to replace old windows with new larger windows?

Posted by dodatki | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling | Posted on 01-05-2010

I am thinking of buying an older home and most of the windows are pretty small (I like lots of natural light). Before buying I am trying to figure out how much it would cost to replace some of the smaller windows in the living room and kitchen with bigger windows, probably to make them about 5 feet tall by 3 feet wide (or whatever is a standard size close to this). Secondly how much it would cost to add windows where currently none exist and thirdly to add a glass patio door where none currently exists. I would be able to take out the old windows myself but would need to pay someone to intall them all which adds the most cost I am sure. I live in Wisconsin. I know there are a million other factors to consider but I guess I am just looking for an estimate, such as $400/window or $2,000/window or what?

How to decorate exterior windows, space too narrow for shutters?

Posted by dodatki | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling | Posted on 05-01-2010

We are installing new (paintable vinyl) exterior shutters on windows. We have two windows that have narrow space on each side — too narrow for 7″ shutter (the smallest we’ve found so far). We have about 5″ to work with. Can we get something to “frame” these windows – vinyl strips? – that can be painted to match the new shutters, so these windows won’t look naked?Submited by:britcaro

Tall skinny windows and lots of them-Any ideas for window coverings?

Posted by dodatki | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling | Posted on 27-12-2009

I’m remodeling a 30X22 foot room. It’s a kitchen and living room all in one, but not my main living room and no TV.

The challenge with this room is the windows. There are 7 windows plus french doors. 4 of these windows are 6 feet tall and only 2 feet wide. They all currently have 2″ wood slat blinds. I think I want to dress up the windows, but don’t know what to do with the skinny windows. I’m not crazy about valances in general. My style is casual contemporary leaning toward traditional, but the kitchen is going to be ultra-modern with a 9X7 foot island.

What can a person do with this many windows PLUS having these narrow windows?Submited by:Aster

What is a good way to get window paint off windows?

Posted by dodatki | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling | Posted on 09-11-2009

as1mplek1nd0fl1fe asked:

The kind of paint I’m referring to is the kind you see in like car dealership windows. I’m looking for a solution or something that will make it come off. Right now we’re scraping it and it’s taking a LONG time so if anyone knows a way to get it off faster.
Two things to clear up:
I’m not trying to get paint off wood, it’s off a window.

Also, the razor blade idea is what we’re doing now and it’s taking a LONG time. A faster way is what I’m looking for.

On exterior windows, how can you put the decorative lines to give a more colonial feel?

Posted by dodatki | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling | Posted on 02-11-2009

Adam G asked:

I just bought a very old city colonial with new replacement windows. However, they look very boxy and uninteresting. There aren’t any grooves in the window to insert decorative lines. Do you have any other suggestions on putting lines on new windows to give it a colonial feel? Thanks so much!

What is the best type of paint, oil or latex, to use on interior windows? I have horizontal sliding windows and am worried about them sticking where the painted surface of the sash contacts the frame. These are new windows that have been primed at the factory.

How can I stop neighbors from looking in my windows?

Posted by dodatki | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling | Posted on 28-10-2009

I have mini blinds and lace curtains on my living room windows, but the next foor neighbors are always trying to look in my windows when I have the blinds open,so have to keep them shut all the time. I would like to find something to put on the windows so they can’t see in. Any suggestions?
My house faces the street but they stand on their front porch, which is conveniently located for them to look across my wooden 6ft fence into my side living room window……they have been reported to the Police more than once for many different things, but it still hasn’t stopped them. I DO keep the blinds shut and the curtains pulled all the time,I put that in the first part of my details. I just want to be able to open my blinds and curtains to enjoy my own back and front yards without having to feel like I am in a prison with NO way to look out without being spied on all the time.Submited by:grbarnaba
