When I turn my mac on it just stays at the white start up page and doesn´t load. What do I do?

How to increase the font size across all applications in Mac OS X?

I use an external monitor with 1920×1080 resolution for my Unibody MacBook. The font size on web pages, menu bar, iTunes library appear very small making it difficult to read. If I reduce the resolution to 1280×720, the sharpness is lost and everything looks blurred. Is there a way to increase the font size or change the DPI in Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)?
