What are the reasons for opposing Chinese tiger farming?

I saw an online petition lately that was asking the Chinese government to permanently ban trading in tiger parts. It appears that China is considering legalizing the trade in tiger parts if the parts are coming from farms that raise tigers especially for this trade.

The petition claimed that legalizing the trade would make it more likely that tigers would become extinct. However, animals that humans farm generally become more plentiful – for instance cows and chickens. Cows and chickens are definitely not on the verge of disappearing from the Earth.

Are there any known major differences between farming chickens and farming tigers, (aside from the fact that chickens are much less likely to eat their farmers)? Is there any reason to think that farming tigers would be likely to cause them to diminish in numbers despite the fact that farming other types of animals causes them to increase in numbers?
